To avoid having to select a code each time, go to your Chart of Accounts and set a default code to use for each account. If it doesn't, you will need to select one in order to add the transaction. If the category has a default code associated with it, the tax code populates automatically. If it doesn't display this information, select or add a transaction type, payee and category (especially if the category is Uncategorized Income or Expense) and code, if needed, before adding the transaction to QuickBooks. If the item is a sales receipt transaction, it also displays the category's associated tax amount, if there is one, or lets you select a code to associate with this transaction. Uncategorized expense or income appears if QuickBooks can't find a likely category. QuickBooks may display a matching customer or vendor name, if one exists, as well as a category.

When QuickBooks downloads your bank data, it analyzes the bank information and gives you a suggested action to take, usually Add, Match, or sometimes Transfer.
